No matter the language, my garden is my paradise. To watch the lovely birds that nest in the trees and bushes. The bees, butterflies are such a joy to see.
I love shopping for plants at Cannor Nursery .. and they always have something funny at the front counter. This made me laugh on Saturday .. if you can see through the glare! What we think is a peaceful little garden scenario:
And they always have the most interesting items in this beautiful trickling water feature .. oh wouldn’t it be nice to have this one!
I wonder if this scares the real herons away?
Lots of colourful fish swimming around ..
Bugs in your yard bothering you? These plants may be just the answer to solve that problem?
Overhead … sky art …
And .. as there is never enough sky art .. here is more …
There are a number of family owned business throughout the city …I like shopping at these places. More personality than big box stores and I like to support them. The helpful and hard working employees always make it a pleasure to shop. Cannor’s has the most interesting plants and, I must confess, I quite often find special deals on plants that I simply Must Have! 🙂
The rains had stopped and the raindrops adorned the leaves of this Rue so gracefully …
How pretty are these succulent plantings …dare I try something like this at home? Perhaps .. it would be fun to try.
And finally!!! A good friend recently went back to Jolly Old and brought us some fantastic souveniers! Now I have a proper tea caddy for my Yorkshire Tea! And very special shopping bags. Love these!!!!
Now I am crazy into dehydrating apples and so I must run to the kitchen and spend some time preparing more for the winter. I plan to make dainty phylo apple pies and so many other things that can be created with these lovely slices.
I was going through some photos that I’d taken during the year and the sweet memories started popping up .. my visual diary of happy days and things seen during my daily life!
Saw this sign posted at a garden shop and it pretty well sums up my gardening life when I’m out in the world, away from my garden! I’m a magnet for perennial plant sales.
From last spring .. beauty in all things ..
Cannors Nursery at the Sears Mall .. loving the decadence of their whimsical decorations. Course I would never ever do that to my violin!! 🙂 This one looks like it has had a lot of adventures, wonder where it was played, by whom and what lovely music has been made when it was being used for its true purpose? Did it go travelling or just stay in town? Did the owners love it to death and practice every day? So many questions. Still, I like that it is a focus of the garden area.
Last spring, Gold Crown Sparrow resting near a blue Camus flower – at Fort Rodd Hill.
Miners Lettuce at Fort Rodd … lush and beautiful. Great for snacking on .. .or make a salad .. lots of natural nutrition ..
Darling JaneE Kat .. sitting on the back stairs, her favourite catnip plant right beside her, ready for nibbling on ..
Salmonberry blooming away .. these plants are easy to propagate, grow quite tall and are very resilient. The orange berries are tasteless and I think the birds love them as I rarely find any to munch on when I go searching. That’s all right by me! More food for them. I do love the flowers though.
Sweet little baby Bewick Wren .. elusive little bird and happy to be able to get a quick photo. They are nesting somewhere in the yard.
A few seconds later, he was perching on a branch of the apple tree .. listening to his parents calling and soon flew away. Love these precious moments in the garden.
Delicate Rock Rose flowers …
Diminutive little flower growing along the ground ..
.. and a tiny little winged creature is dining out on an early Saturday morning in the sun ..
Magnificent Beaufort Mountain Range and the stately clouds adorn it like a crown, how very fitting!
And so DH sweeps us away up to the clouds in the dear blue skies above … flying in the PW6-U …
Woo Hoo .. this is living …. miss this and looking forward to the spring when we can go flying up there again .. and again .. and again …
Travelling in the air is so magical .. it is truly another world and I am so very happy that DH takes me away to this special place .. Let’s see .. garden .. sky .. garden .. sky .. oh I have the best of both mystical and magical worlds I am so lucky!
Here is a great explanatory interview of the PW6-U The Pawnee is the tow plane, they were used for crop dusting years ago.
And this is truly .. truly .. so beautiful … enjoy this beautiful flying video, it captures the essence of ..sailplane flight up in Port Alberni … my most favourite video ever ..so perhaps you can see how magical this flying is and why I love it so much.
Anyone can go on a Scenic flight and have a taste of what it is like to glide high in the skies at the Beaufort Mountains ..
Sigh …
The fall winds have started and the leaves have started to rain down to the ground. A change in scenery, wild and free.
I’m looking forward to going outside to see how the bean forest is doing .. and today will start leaving out a little bit more seed and suet for the birds who visit. Yesterday I saw my first Junco so I’ll start leaving out the flax seed that they love.
The baby birds hatched this past spring will soon be experiencing their first winter. I know that they are wild birds and will survive. However, I can’t resist a little picture in my mind, of knitting them the tiniest of little scarves and sweaters from silky spider webs to keep them warm!
They will survive. And I will support them by ensuring that I keep their feeders clean, give them good seed mixes and make sure there is a steady supply of water, even when the temperature goes down.
A week or so ago, my pal D and I travelled to Sooke for one of our infrequent trips to this lovely little town not far from Victoria. Our aim is to enjoy the relaxing ocean atmosphere, gather a little bit of the raggedy seaweed (not too much and only that which is not home to living creatures). Breathe in the invigorating salt air. Drink in the sight of such beauty. And just chill out. Each with our own thoughts and each wandering about the beach in our own little walks. A time for relaxing. A treat.
I’m not a boater but I do enjoy watching the vessels, sailboats etc., that journey across the waters. The air and the ground are my elements. The water is beautiful, though.
In the distance, the remaining fog resembled earthbound clouds, struggling to get back up high (that is what it seemed to me!)
Very peaceful indeed … tranquil, restful, all that and more …
Here the fog looks like gauzy waves dreamily forming against the mountains .. sigh.
The seagull has some tasty treasure to feast on ..
Feeding over, time to just rest among the seaweed ..
The comforting solid density of the rock … warm to the touch .. interesting in the textures formed by the years of pressure, travel and the sort of thing that happens to rocks over the years.
How beautiful is this ….
I love personal touches such as this … a respite for a little bird, how sweet.
Beach time over with .. we head to our favourite Cafe ..
Time for a decaf mocha Americana .. yum ..
Such a restful and tranquil garden at the back of the cafe ..love the hedge of boxwood around the fountain.
Pretty flowers, eye candy for gardeners ..
With the noise cancelling sounds of the fountain and the lush plantings, it is difficult to remember that there is heavy traffic on the other side of the bushes and plants. Nice!
And there is my little red car .. my trusty little vehicle .. so practical and so fun to take on little holidays and daytrips such as this! 🙂
How sweet is this .. colourful and fun …
And at the front of the cafe are little tables for people to sit at, sip their drinks and ponder the world.
So we had just a most relaxing and fun filled day. Afterwards we went to the one thrift shop that remains in the town. There used to be another one which was quite fun to shop at .. but for some reason, it is shut down. So now there is a mad rush for everyone to go to the one place that exists. Still fun and we do find some treasures.
It is fun to zip away for the day with a friend and just do some exploring .. at the ocean .. at a cafe .. at a thrift shop.
We never know what we will see or discover and we always have such a great time.
Well .. the day is speeding along .. so on with this most beautiful and sunny day.
I used to drink tons and tons of coffee … and my life used to just buzzzzzz … gradually I turned to tea.
And I went through many brands. Red Rose. Salada. Twinings. Bigelow. All types of herbal teas. I was just a tea nut, trying out many different brands over the years.
Then I discovered this lovely tea, at London Drugs. It was the packaging that caught my eye, but it was the taste that drew me in. Besides all the wonderful ethics of the company .. they are also very witty. They are British you know. I love buying the large boxes of this tea and have um, about 6 in the pantry right now.
Here is the Yorkshire Tea web site .. and be sure to click on the videos, they are amazing!!
Then someone treated me to some Irish Breakfast tea. I hadn’t heard of it before so I just had to buy some at Thrifty Foods. Regular and Decaf! Good tea.
So, in the Quality Foods Flyer a few weeks ago, I notice that there is a Scottish Tea. Good heavens, is there no end to these UK teas?? Last Saturday I went to the store and couldn’t find this in the Tea section, a young clerk (from Scotland!) helped me find this box. And neither he nor I could figure out what “Specially Blended for Scottish Water” means. I even asked someone in Scotland and was told the water there is the same as the water here. So this must be a marketing ploy. 🙂 The teabags are built like a pyramid, with their tri-corners.
It almost seemed like a tempest in a teapot. That makes no sense, but the thought popped up so I just typed it!
A group of Girl Guides were selling the cookies at the mall, so after I bought the tea, I paid for a box of cookies. Tea and cookies! Delicious on a Saturday afternoon and the cookies did not last long, they were so good. I was very mature and only bought one box!
We were stopped at a traffic light and I wasn’t driving, so I swiftly took my camera out and snapped this happy photo. Well done, hay? Very cheerful and people were out in the fields, choosing their special pumpkin for Halloween.
And back at home, I was able to gather some gifts from the garden!!
So, fall is officially here. The beans are still growing .. I am able to pick many of them every day and more are growing on the vines!
And such a busy time, preparing the beans for the dehydrator. And drying the corn, fruit leather and then the green tomatoes for veggie powder mix.
Getting ready for the wintertime, for the lovely hearty soups and stews that will be so comforting on cold and rainy days.
One day last week, I started my adventures in a garden center! This is Cannor’s at the Sears Mall .. a lovely gathering of the most wonderful plants and delightful things for the garden. This sign caught my attention, cause that is what gardening is all about, right?
I noticed some male and female Sea Buckthorn plants! I have one at home, but darn if I know which sex it is. So, after talking with the very knowledgeable Manager there, I learned that it is virtually impossible to tell the difference between the male and the female plants, besides – the plant tags showed that they both bore orange berries.
After learning that the plants were on sale, 50% off … the decision was easily made for me and so I bought one of each. So now I have 3, either 2 male and 1 female or the opposite.
A lone crow flies overhead, flapping madly to join his pals …up in the wild blue sky.
Later on I made my way to a local Starbuck’s and happened to meet this most wonderful dog named Buck! He is so very sweet and I fell in love with him. I learned that he was born in England, has travelled all over the world and now lives here in Victoria. I felt so very honoured when he showed his trust by rolling over and offering his tummy to be rubbed and then sat up and leaned into me for a good hug. And I felt so happy hugging him and feeling all that honest and innocent doggy love. I miss having dogs and so I value all the dogs that I meet in my life. All are so very special.
Now time for a little rest … sweet little Buck. I learned that Buck is named after the travelling dog in the book published in 1902: Buck
Last week, when I dug up a huge container of potatoes, I found a strange green lime-shaped object. It was something I hadn’t planted and so I was quite puzzled, but brought it into the house anyway. Before discarding it, I decided to just peel away the outer green covering and lo and behold – found this walnut. Mystery solved, a squirrel must have hidden this treasure for a winter treat. I’ll plant this in a pot (with a label!!) and will wait and see if it will grow for next year. Those squirrels. I’m constantly finding peanuts in the shell that they have planted. For whatever reason (I don’t want to think) the squirrels don’t return and so the peanuts either grow into plants or just fall apart. I wish that they would just enjoy the peanuts now but that isn’t their way.
Darling little JaneE Kat, water beading off her fur, she has just had another wash tub sump pump shower and now is munching on her treats. Life is good.
During one of my random wanderings in the back yard, noticed this tiny pink geranium flowering away. I hadn’t noticed the little bee, though, till now .. love such surprises!
Another sweet surprise, tiny flowers quietly bursting forth ….little trumpets for the bees.
Last week, my pal D and I went out for a day of gathering seaweed and thrift store shopping. More about that another day, but just wanted to share a lovely find! She is always discovering the most amazing little treasures in the shops and here is one! At first I didn’t pay any attention, but, as she pointed out, this broom was made entirely of bamboo! As I have a lot of bamboo growing in the yard, this caught my attention quite quickly. So I purchased this one. Back at home, I gathered the necessary materials and made one of these brooms for myself! Tying bunches of the bamboo side branches securely around a length of the solid length of bamboo, using flexible coated garden wire, I soon had it done. These brooms are just fantastic for sweeping up fallen leaves – I tested them. More gentle than a rake. Now I have an interest in trying to make brooms out of fine branches pruned from trees .. these would make a slightly sturdier broom for sweeping. Another interest to pursue, love it!
And I’ve fallen madly in love with dehydrating! Haven’t done this for many years and it is just so much fun to rediscover this again! I bought a great little dehydrator from Lee Valley .. it works like a charm and was not expensive at all. Our freezer is full to bursting with a surplus of frozen fruit so I removed about 10 bags which included plums, blueberries, raspberries and pureed them all together. I then added home-made applesauce and a little bit of liquid honey which was given to us by friends.
This is the result and it is delicious . I’m so excited. At Lee Valley I also bought the most amazing book on dehydrating, by Tammy Gangloff, Steven Gangloff & September Ferguson – full of details on every aspect of dehydrating. Normally I do not buy books unless they are on sale. But when I find a book that is so full of information, I do not hesitate to buy it.
I cut the large circles into 2 sections and rolled each one up in waxed paper, nice and tidy. Easy to pack in my purse and take along for a quick energy boost throughout the day.
I’ve been trying a variety of things to dehydrate. One mixture has beet leaves, sorrel, nasturtium leaves and kale – dried and powdered and in a jar, ready to sprinkle into stoups or stews for the winter. And these tomatoes from the garden dry & powder so well! Hadn’t thought I had many tomatoes at all but it seems there are sufficient.
Right now I’m waiting for the “Longview” organic red/orange and green pepper slices to dry and I’ll be crumbling them up into little flakes for future dishes. And there are a dozen ears of corn to be lightly cooked, then the niblets cut away and into the dehydrator. Dried items take up way less space than frozen food and I really need to make more space in the freezer. I know there is enough frozen fruit to make a few more batches of fruit leather! Some for us and some to share.
This is a big bag of greens that I bought from Silver Rill farm last week .. long since washed, cut up, dried and now ready for adding to meals. What fun.
So recently my life has been chock full of new discoveries outside and in the kitchen. Exciting adventures in dehydrating foods and just loving how things are turning out. Plans for future mixtures are dancing away in my imagination. In the dehydrator book .. there are ideas for making fun shapes of fruit leather with various colours of fruit puree. I was just too impatient to try this out at first, but think I will attempt this another day.
And normally I make a paste out of garlic that is left over from planting and sharing. And freeze the paste, great to add to anything (but not ice-cream!) This year I will try drying the garlic and powdering some of it. Delicious garlic grown in the best organic way in my garden. Yum yum yum!
Oh the endless possibilities of dehydrating.
Now I must go and empty the dried tomatoes & greens and prepare the corn.
Lucky us with lots of sun happening .. JaneE Kat doing her due diligence by the wash tub water fountain. She just loves having her showers here …and patrols this area quite often. And then she sits in the sun to dry off.
Here is me and my shadow …taking a photo of me! Another me in another dimension coincidentally occurring in the same timeline? And I had planted my potatoes late also .. these are supposed to be purple potatoes. I’d planted them in a huge oversize container in the back of the yard and they didn’t get much sun at all. Still, a respectable amount of potatoes despite all that. And that green thing that looks like a lime is totally strange. It grew along with the potatoes and is a strange vegetable .. one which I will not eat! This is the rose that I’d planted many years ago. It survives on nothing, I swear. I don’t water it or feed it and it keeps growing on. The root system must be very deep. Anyway, I’d given it a very hard pruning months ago and was surprised to see the new growth. That’s my kind of plant. Tough and independent and at the same time, so very beautiful.I know that there are many ladybugs in the yard but I really hadn’t seen many until I saw this shiny new one, resting on a bucket lid. Did it prefer the red colouring? Seems so.The pigmentation is starting to change in the bean plants ..quite pretty, I think.Despite this .. all of the pole beans are growing like mad and there are so many flowers and beans growing!A morning photo .. dew on the bean leaves .. I like the effect.Sweet little Gold Crowned Sparrow .. doing the shuffle shuffle dance, looking for food amongst the fallen leaves of the wild and crazy tree (pear stock).
In the backyard, a diminutive Anna perched on a branch of the wild and crazy tree …there are quite a few around the front, sides and back yard ..adding a speedy sparkle to the atmosphere.
Oh, la la .. the French Marigold has blossomed, adding a spice of red and gold to the garden. I’d sowed the seeds after I planted the beans and was surprise to see them (but happy at the same time!)And the tiny tomatoes keep on growing ..there are quite a few. I don’t give them any special care and they just flourish. See the tiny one growing on the left? Is it a tomato or is it a tiny garden sprite, camouflaging itself so that I wouldn’t notice? The top part does really look like the kind of headgear that a little sprite would wear during the summer, to blend in and no one could notice. There are sunflowers in all stages of growth near the bird feeder. This one is at the seed forming stage …
And this one is at the smorgasbord stage …the birds are feasting on the seeds which are still growing .
I know that summer is over and fall has begun. But when the sun shines so warmly as it has done for the past while .. it’s easy for me to pretend that it is still summer. With a mug of strong Yorkshire tea in hand, I walk around my bean forest and bask in the joy that a garden brings. Reliving the steps that I took to prepare the soil, plant the seed, build up the structures for the beans to grow along.
Planning what to do for next year. Soon enough it will be time to undo all that I have done and stow equipment away for the winter. Still have another month for that, though. So I will just continue to wander around and enjoy what is there.
Watching the dancing blue skies above … with the achingly beautiful cloud designs that are constantly changing and adding so much design and texture.
Loving the sight and sounds of the birds as they perch in the trees, fly about the yard and surprise me with their sudden chirps. The Chickadees, in particular, love to settle on a branch by any one of the bird feeders and demand more food.
JaneE, with her wash tub showers and imperious demands for treats makes me laugh.
The pyracantha berries are nearly all dry .. I spread the orange berries outside in the sun to dry and take them inside for the night. I hope that the birds will enjoy them during the winter months.
The garden is a busy, happy and magical place to be!
There is much to be learned and there is a lot of wisdom there if one looks closely enough.
It was a lovely sunny September Monday .. and DH surprised me with a flight on my Birthday! What a fun way to spend the day. While he was preparing the plane and doing all the necessary things that need to be done on a pre-flight inspection, I was able to just wander around, looking up at the sky and then down at the ground. Interesting things to see everywhere.
Here is one of those lovely little periwinkle blue flowers .. don’t know the name, but they are everywhere and are just so pretty. And the versatile and under-appreciated dandelion! Good for medicinal purposes, dying fabric, culinary and, again, just plain pretty. Remember putting a dandelion beneath someone’s chin, as a child, to see if it reflects and if it does, you like butter?
One of the potted plants at Dakota Cafe, I’d planted this one a year ago, now it has spread, is still velvety soft and there are dainty yellow flowers gracefully growing throughout. I will propagate this beauty. Hardy succulents are perfect for the hot summers and don’t need much care at all.
Anyway, up up and away and soon we approached the Qualicum Airport.
Qualicum is a lovely airport, it has a terrific restaurant with delicious food, friendly staff. And the location makes it easy for a little walk to town – we’ve done that a few times. There are always interesting planes visiting there and we do get a chance to chat with a variety of pilots.
After lunch, time to head back to Victoria … I like these chairs, casually arranged on the other side of the runway, behind the fence. There is a trail over there and I can just imagine people taking a break, relaxing and watching the planes arrive and depart.
Here is a racetrack up by Duncan, looks like fun and a great track.
All too soon .. we are back to Victoria ….I love flying and the toughest part is landing when I would really prefer to be up in the air!
I indulged in a fair bit of sky watching .. these formations look like Greyhounds, bounding through the skies!
This reminds me of an ice-cream sundae .. yum, yum! Or perhaps peas in a pod?
Such a variety of skies yesterday.. and they were always happy skies ….at one point, I watched a pair of Turkey Vultures, calmly, majestically following gentle thermals that wafted through the skies … I didn’t try to take any photos, they would only have looked like little dots in the sky. So I just enjoyed their beautiful flying.
So, thoughts on my birthday. I always feel as if each one is the start of a fresh new year for me. Just like New Years Day.
I’m infinitely grateful and in my heart I always give thanks to my Mother for giving me this life.
No matter my age, I consistently feel like a kid .. always looking forward to whatever life offers to me and it offers quite a lot.
I am grateful for my many and varied interests and happy that I can get quite enthused about so many things.
Sometimes I make promises that I don’t keep but they are fun to make and always give me a sense of purpose.
Promises like:
I will do some housework every day
I will clear up my desk (yet again)
I will try to go to bed earlier so I can get up earlier so I can do more things .. sigh
I will watch my diet better (oh, yeah!)
I will finish some projects begun a long time ago
Things like that. I feel extremely virtuous when I strive to fulfill these promises and when I do keep some of them, well, that is like the icing on the cake.
Speaking of cake, my DH surprised with a delicious chocolate birthday cake, complete with flowers and my name and sang me Happy Birthday .. a complete surprise!
I am so very lucky!
Anyway, just a few reasons why I like birthdays so much.
A lovely big dragonfly was zooming around the yard a few days ago so I thought that I would provide a drinking dish for it. Pretty marbles in a dish with a bit of water. I waited around for the return of the dragonfly but alas wasn’t able to see it. Hoping it returned and, liking the colourful display, rested there for awhile. There is a lot of activity in the garden when I’m not there!Sweet little JaneE Kat patiently awaiting her treats!
A fresh new birdfeeder is welcomed quickly by the birds. Here is a little sparrow – he has ventured inside and is now perched in the opening, checking to see if other birds are nearby. He owns the feeder for now.
Give us this day our daily beans. Non stop growing of all the beans. I’m juicing these like mad as there is no more room in the freezer. Maybe I could set up a road-side stand in front of our house?? 🙂Fall really is approaching. The daily dance of the wild and crazy tree (pear tree stock that has grown like mad over the years) results in a potpourri of the leaves being scattered throughout the yard. The pear trellis rust is nearly gone. Thanks to all the healthy foods I’m feeding the tree with. EM, llama manure, seaweed, nothing but the best for my garden.Lots of self-sown tomatoes. So dainty. More sunflowers ready to burst into bloom. Lots of flowers everywhere for the bees. Lovely to see the flowers of the Scarlet Red Runner Beans. Prolific beans and tasty.
More of my “favourite” beans .. pole vines that grow up high, into the trees. Nice crunchy beans & delicious cooked or juiced. There will be lots of these seeds for sharing so others can enjoy them next summer.
Just a handful of beans picked – Spanish Musica, Blue Lake Bush, Scarlet Red Runner and my “favourite” beans. I like using these round baskets as my “picking” containers, have had them for years and have no idea where I got them. Anyway, some days I go outside and pick 2 full containers of beans. Morning and afternoon. I’m honestly so surprised at the bountiful growth of these beans. And I swear they hide on me sometimes. I feel like the great “bean hunter” as I carefully search for them in the bean forest. There will be a great supply of the Spanish Musica beans also, for sharing. There must be at least 30 pods (with many seeds in each one) hanging way above my head, too far to reach so I’ll just let them stay on the vine and let the pods dry .
Eye candy for me to enjoy during the cold winter months – inspiration to start planting as soon as the spring starts. Next year I’ll plant the squash and beans a little earlier than I did this year (mid-July) so that the squash plants will have a chance to grow more fully.
More aerial looping by the beans. Now why on earth is this bean doing the twisty thing? No obstacles in its way. Just being silly I think.
ta da! Very strong tomato plants that grew from the compost that I put here. A very sturdy plant with lots of tomatoes. I’ve been clipping away surplus leave so all the energy will go towards the tomatoes themselves. Last year I grew those tiny patty pan squash in this oak container and they grew very well. This year tomatoes are growing here. Next year .. potatoes? tomatoes? who knows.
I know that the season is nearly over and I won’t get tomatoes from these flowers, but the bees will savour the nectar.
This is the time of the year for gardeners to tidy up the yards and get ready for the cold weather. So I’m doing all of that also.
And I am also spending a lot of time just wandering around the yard, admiring the growth of the plants. Thinking about where to move this and that. Mixing up the rich compost with poorer soil. Gathering up all the plant saucers that were so needed during the hot weather, so that all potted plants watered would retain some moisture for the roots. With the fall rains coming these are no longer necessary.
Watching the bird activity – welcoming the fall visitors, like the Gold Crowned Sparrows back to our yard so I can enjoy their beauty. Placing some seed in the feeders .. not too much as there is a lot of food available to them naturally. Enjoying the Nuthatches as they dig out insects from the trees. Listening to the Bewick Wrens as they sing their unique songs from hidden areas in the trees. Loving that. I still have their abandoned nest from a few years ago ..and know that they are nesting somewhere in the yard. https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Bewicks_Wren/id
Such an interesting place is my garden! So many things to see and enjoy.
Saturday .. a few days ago .. was a magnificently beautiful day and the skies were just plain awesome. I’d accompanied DH to the lumber store and while he selected the supplies that he needed for a project, I wandered outside .. and devoted some time in admiring the show high above me.
We all have fun seeing shapes in the clouds and sometimes they are clearly seen. In this one, I can see someone riding a horse .. galloping away to a place in the sky ..
Same sky .. another area .. wispy waves that look like a sand washed beach ..
Dreamy wispy clouds that look like the softest of cotton candy floss ..
Happy dancing clouds …
I caught some tree branches in this photo but it shows that fall is near, leaves have begun to fall .. are the branches waving to the sky? Perhaps.
Are these two clouds lusting after each other? They seem to be kissing. Lovely, against a panoramic background of incredibly beautiful sky art.
And the kissing clouds are softly covered with a gauzy curtain of fluffy white clouds. Censorship ?? “ok you’ve seen enough .. run along now” 🙂
Love seeing such a variety of shapes and textures up above .. and I love even better being up there, flying amongst them.
Now I can see something above the upper half of this photo .. is it a spreading tree, branches flung far and wide? Is it a mythical shape from Aesop’s fables?
The cumulus clouds were so solidly dense it seemed as if I could just reach up and break off a piece .. like a marshmallow or something like that. And, ahem .. are these more amorous clouds that I see???
The clouds are getting a bit darker in some areas .. an indication that rain will be happening later on .. and there was a little bit of rain but not that much really.
Art Nouveau, anyone? Time to return home, vehicle loaded with supplies. Camera loaded up with more beautiful photos of the uplifting skies above.
The beauty of the skies has a special energy which I find quite compelling. Such random beauty that is ever changing and brightens up our daylight hours.
I am compelled to look upwards and sometimes must remind myself to focus on where I am as it is easy to trip over something!
At this stage of my life I am no longer embarrassed to be looking upwards and quite often I just simply stand still in awe of the beauty up there. And there is lots of action up there also .. soon it will be time for the Turkey Vultures to migrate and luckily we are on their pathway so I must keep looking up to see this feat of nature.
The magic of seeing these birds, many hundreds of them, is humbling. They are part of the nature that created this earth and we mere humans must always respect this.
Despite all the inventions by humans, the raw power of nature answers to no one.
Thank goodness for that, eh???
I have to say this … we Canadians are well known for saying “eh” … and that is not a bad thing. And there are a few thoughts on how this came about.
My vote is for the French “hein” meaning “what”? Some words in French, carried over to English, are pronounced without the “h” sound. thus “hein” becomes “eh”. And there are other words carried over also, which need the “h” sound, but that is for another day, another blog.
Fall is near and dear and the skies sometimes reflect this …
The little birds are getting themselves ready to endure the coming cold weather so I help them out by putting small sections of suet and bird seed out for them
I think this is a female Bush-tit .. sweet little bird ..
It is still hit and miss to try and get a good photo of the Gold Crowned Sparrows .. love their songs ..
There are a number of Nuthatches that visit the yard .. they like this feeder in particular. I’ve spent a fair bit of $$ on good quality bird seed. The birds aren’t impressed with the costlier hulled sunflower seeds and mostly just toss them out of the feeder. So I won’t be buying that again! They prefer to pick out the un-hulled seeds to take away with them.
A geranium plant is preparing to unfurl a bouquet of lovely flowers …
It almost seems like a New Year’s celebration with all the curling tendrils of the squash plants .. all we need are sparkling lights to add to the festive atmosphere.
The rains began, sporadically, on Friday … yesterday the pattern continued, with interspersed spots of sun and visits by the wind.
I wandered outside … looking at the birds. The word is out that there is extra food set out in the feeders so there are quite a variety. A Flicker belts out his happy song from up above in the wild and crazy tree. He is tucked away in the branches so I couldn’t get a glimpse of his beautiful plumage. I’ll get a good look, though, in the upcoming season. They can’t stay away from the suet!
The Gold Crowned Sparrows have returned during the past week ..their lovely songs warm my heart and I am so pleased they are back.
Despite the chilly weather, I just know that there will be warm and sunny days ahead. Plenty of time for the hundreds of bean flowers to transform into juicy green beans.
This has been a most bountiful year for all gardeners and I’ve heard many excited stories of people trading their excess of fruit and veggies with others. Happy stories.
Myself, I am quite content with my summer of growing beans, loving the beauty of the tall pole plants providing privacy, shade and food for our freezer (and juicer!).
Healthy plants, fed with seaweed, (unmedicated) llama manure and the powerful EM (effective microorganism) that I mix up. Along with a sprinkle of rock powder, my garden soil has enabled all my plants to grow happily.
The cleaning up of the garden has begun and I have more to do .. potting up plants, moving them to one area of the yard so they will be easier to maintain. Some pruning to be done, some clipping of errant branches and heavy cutting of larger limbs that seemed to have suddenly appeared. That will be dh’s job as a chainsaw will be needed. More sun to come in the yard.
Another year of gardening has flown by .. another year of magic. Still amazed at the power of one little seed growing into massive plants that bear food for us to eat. Timeless transformations. It never gets tired.
