My Lovely Garden … Mon Joli Jardin

No matter the language, my garden is my paradise. To watch the lovely birds that nest in the trees and bushes. The bees, butterflies are such a joy to see.

Funny how the days speed along .. I quite lose track of the date and have to check with the paper or Outlook or the bottom right corner of my little Asus to see the numbered day of the week.  Cool, being retired.  In my previous life (since I began working during my summer jobs which began with my 15th birthday and continued till (ahem) a little over 2 years ago … the date and the time was paramount in my life.

Tied to the hands of a clock and a calendar, I sped through the weeks, months, years that carried me along as I struggled to keep up with all the things that life brought me.  Work. Fun.  Love.  Gardening.  And it’s the last 3 that carried over into my retirement phase.

Love of my darling and fun DH who makes my life such a wonderful experience.

Fun … yeah .. laughing and enjoying all that this most wonderful world has to offer.

Gardening.  A universe that fills my life with it’s wondrous beauty, adventures, insight into the many sub stratas of insect, bird, plants, seeds .. oh how I love this part of my life.

Anyway.

Lately I’ve been very occupied with sorting out our yard .. the sides, the back and next, the front.

So much to do.

Quite enjoying the transformation and all that is entailed with that.

And part of my lovely life includes the most marvellous fun of flying .. high in the sky .. my DH at the controls and I at his side, the co-pilot who is able to snap pics and enjoy the beauty of being aloft and floating like a feather through the air.

This leads to the activity of sky-gazing and quite often I spend so much time when I “should” be gardening .. looking upwards at the ever-changing scenery of clouds, plane watching, bird sightings .. all those terrific things that happen in the air.

Now here is a sky-shot from yesterday.. how very magnificent and ever changing ..

01

and .. like .. wow ….open welcoming sky arms .. I embrace you ….

02

and then .. back to the garden .. some play time!03

ok … earthward bound now.    For just a little while I have no concerns about what to plant where.  No worries about weeding.   Where watering is needed.  Sorting out plant pots to give away .. I do have quite a supply.   I just simply played.

My pal D and I had wandered around the Sooke Harbour House (beautiful) gardens and saw many playful art sculptures in the garden.   One that I particularly liked was the random placement of pots on a length of rebar.  A few days ago I was perusing Pinterest and came upon the same design.  So I thought .. well, I have the rebar, I have the pots, I have the time .. so a perfect opportunity to create some art in the garden!

I had a clear area in the garlic forest, where I had recently dug up some garlic .. and here is where the fun began.  And I am so fired up about  this type of gardening that I am really hooked!!  So very, very simple.

Select a length of rebar, hammer into the gr0und (at least a foot into the soil, to better stabilize the column of pots).  Place the largest pot over the rebar, settle on the ground and  fill with soil.  Add another pot.  And so on.   As each pot is filled, it’s a piece of cake to position the next pot at an angle.   On my first column  I realized later that I could have balanced the second pot on the edge of the first pot and would have had more planting area.   sigh.  Oh well.

D told me that people add designs, colour, text .. on the pots.  Exciting … more worlds to explore.

And that reminds me .. I have a very large supply of sparkly beads, tiles, all kinds of wonderous things that I could decorate pots with … the possibilities, as they say – are endless!!!

Anyway.  I planted 2 of these, sowed the seeds, labelled and now will await the results.

This is so fun, I just love this! … lots and lots of ideas about this type of gardening . … how very very energizing!

Time for morning munchies .. I love dates …

04

Oh, almost forgot .. I brought out my seed supplies and began sorting them out onto my newly purchased gardening table .. more on another day about that!!!

Sorted into suppliers.  Interesting to lay out the packets and see what I had bought over the past few years.  There were quite a few from Richters (I love Richters!!!) , local seed suppliers, quite interesting to see.   Whatever doesn’t get planted this year …. will try to plant them next year.  99% are listed Organic!  🙂

10

I placed some bamboo lengths in the “Kentucky Wonder Beans” and overnight they began climbing!!!  The magic of nature at work.

09

And .. look at the most beautiful Art Deco teacup and saucer that D just bought!    It matches the Blue Poppy seed packet that I picked up at the Butchart Gardens!  Very striking.

11Well … time is marching on .. time to go about my day …just thought I would share some of my happy moments .. lots more to come .. I have been quite busy taking photos and love to share them!

🙂

Scooping plastic waste from the Sea

I’ve been very busy lately .. both working hard in the garden, to finally try and plant everything (well, most of it anyway) and taking lots of wonderful photos.

Also I’ve started back on my exercise regime .. just 45 minutes of stretching and some Callanetics and a brisk long walk.

Then .. some housework, and outside.

Somehow the days just disappear.

I don’t even make time for reading the paper.  Well .. this morning after exercising, walking, shopping, laundry and even .. hold the phone .. vacuuming!!!  I decided to make a cup of tea and read yesterday’s Time Colonist paper.

And I am so very very glad that I did.

There was the most amazing article on page C1 of the business section about the most amazing group of entrepreneurs who are involved in locating plastics in the seas and oceans and repurposing them.   And in the process, giving credits to those who bring them in.  The credits can be used for a variety of things, education included. This is how the world changes in the most supportive and valuable way.

The article contained the web site:  plasticbank.org .. you simply must go there to see what is happening.

Makes my heart glad.

The story of how this came about is quite interesting and here is the link for that:  http://www.timescolonist.com/business/scooping-plastic-waste-from-the-sea-for-the-plastic-bank-1.317883

The owner of the plastic tracking system is David Katz and I think he is just the most wonderfully amazing person ….

Imagine .. in the future … less and less plastic in the waters of the world …what a dream that will become a reality.

So I’m happy that I took the time to open the paper and learn of this most wonderful young man and the team of people who are working alongside of him.

Brilliant beam of hope for the future of the oceans!!

🙂

off to the garden now …

A sunny walk at Swan Lake .. my daily walking adventures continue!

Tuesday, June 4, 2013

Lovely summer days, not sure if it is officially summer yet ..but we’ve had quite a few (more than 3!) days of  warm sunny weather.

And, yeah, yesterday I began again my lovely long morning walks.   I’d started the year out well, walking and exercising .. however, that had to be put on hold for a number of months while DH and I worked on the landscaping of our rental.

Now that is complete and my walking adventures continue!

Lovely border flourishing at the edge of the local allotment gardens!

01

And this garden area looked most welcoming .. very friendly and open.

02

Farther along .. I think this is Cottonwood fluff … looks a lot like snow!
03

Lovely cheerful sunlight lights up the leaves …

04

Can you see the tiny little dot to the left of the tree trunk?  A spritely little Robin poses for a minute.

05

At very long last .. closer to Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary!!!!  Feels like I”m going home for a visit .. it’s been awhile!

06

Aptly named, eh?

07

Not many people out as I walked along the pathways.  Serious birders have most likely come and gone.  I passed a few joggers and some teenagers .. but otherwise, it was a lovely quiet moment in time.

08

All is quite peaceful at Tuesday Pond .. I’ve missed the baby ducklings and goslings.  Noticed this couple of Mallards, quickly snapped a photo and silently backed away .. to leave them undisturbed, although they knew I was there.    This is their home, after all, and I am but a visitor there.  Respect.

09

How splendid .. all growing things are fully leafed out …

10

I tiptoed along the little bridge spanning Tuesday Pond, not wanting to disturb the bathing ritual of the little Robin below.

11

One of the million or so wild roses blooming .. scenting the air with their most beautiful perfume ..

12

Dainty little wild flowers have been lovingly planted in spaces along the rock’s surface …

13

Next I notice the hawk perched high above .. overseeing the Sanctuary . . he knows I’m there and turns his heard around several times to stare at me as  lift my little camera to take a photo.  Decides I’m not going to cause any trouble … so that’s a good thing!

14

Time for a quick grooming …

15

A loose feather is plucked out .. and I watched as it tumbled … floating gently into the blackberry bushes below.   I was so tempted to wade into the chest-high grasses to retrieve it, but decided to leave it.   I even stepped a few feet into the grass, but realized that the odds of finding the feather in the thick growth of blackberries that surrounded the base of the tree were slim to none.

16

Leaving the Hawk to continue his search for breakfast .. I continued on my way.

18

Beautiful … beautiful .. beautiful …

19

No birds about .. must signify that the eagles are nearby …

20

The little observatory .. and I searched for the remains of the Marsh Wren’s nest, but couldn’t see any …

21

What a wonderful way to start the day!   And then I spent the rest of this most marvellous day playing in the yard.  Mulching the garlic beds with the seaweed that D & I collected last week.   This garlic crop is stupendous.   Some of the soft necks were growing out of the ground and they were huge!  Also. although I’d planted the cloves some distance apart, somehow, during the winter, some of them had converged into groups of 2 and 3!!

Ah well .. time for another walking adventure and backyard gardening!

🙂

Another day at the beach … gathering seaweed .. breathing in the fresh ocean air .. and there were seals out there!

Sunday, June 2, 2013

Lovely lazy Sunday … slightly overcast and then the sun broke out of the clouds, yea!!!

Friday my pal D and I ventured out to Sooke to gather some seaweed for gardening.  It was a most beautiful day.

First thing, though,  had to check on my shallots .. hadn’t grown them before and had purchased some Dutch shallots from Richters Herbs… here is one of them .. shedding the papery husk of the original bulb .. I thought this was worthy of the “magic” of gardening so thus the photo.   They are tenacious growers and I would like to plant more of them.  Maybe I’ll get into a shallot growing  frenzy as I have done with garlic!

Everything is always magical in the garden .. it just never gets old and always I am humbled at the miracle of a seed growing into a plant .. the inherent knowledge of the plant (non-GMO, of course) .. nature happening in it’s own way …

01

Here are some Valerian plants .. growing so tall .. I need to plant them soon …

02

Ok, so D and I arrive at one of the many beaches in Sooke .. what a magnificent day.  And both of us are experiencing issues near our homes, where vast building projects are ongoing and we really need some natural beauty to offset the construction issues.  This s a good start.

03

What amazing skies ..
04

The stones are placed so artistically along the shoreline … now this is real art .. the natural kind.

05

It was a lovely outing, escaping to nature.   No cranes.  No trucks.  No hammering.  Just the soothing sounds of the waves off in the distance .. a warm breeze swirling around us as we gathered seaweed.  Now that was a lot of work and we quickly filled some bags which I loaded into my trusty little car.   Then it was time to relax and go for a walk along the shoreline.

Such clear water on the firmly packed sand .. like a mini-pool

06

The tide was way out there ….
09

I could see tiny crabs and lightning fast little fishes darting in all directions below.

08

And D noticed this large piece of heavy industrial  plastic .. it looked like a hatch cover.  Would have liked to have removed it from the beach but it was very heavy, so we had to leave it there.

07

Such a relaxing sight to see the myriad of stones beneath the clear saltwater.

08

D noticed the seals … out sunning themselves on the rocks … their barking noises echoed over the water and sounded quite close to us

10

And I learned from D that this is sea-asparagus.  Served in fine restaurants, imagine that.  Most likely not cheap, either.

14

This ancient log resembles a whale, don’t you think?

13

More seals …enjoying their natural habitat ..

12

11

It was a fun relaxing day trip and finally it was time to leave .  However, we did stop along the way and went for another walk in a small forested area along the highway … where the fronds of the ferns were now unfurled and the well-worn pathways were edged with fields of them.

Photos tomorrow ..  now it is time to work outside .. to enjoy the one day of the week when the construction noises cease and I can pretend that today is like the normal days of years ago .. when quiet was normal.  sigh.

🙂

The eagles were hunting for lunch ….. on an overcast Sunday

Friday, May 31, 2013

A few weeks ago, when we were working away on our rental ….I heard the sounds of the local eagles who were out hunting for lunch.

Their cries were quite loud which meant that they were very close by.

Dropping my gardening tools, I ran into the street, joined by my neighbour.  We could see the eagles swooping low, flying in tandem .. seeking their prey.

So we simply ran down the street towards the action, surprised that others in the neighbourhood simply ignored the activity.

Eagle 1

The look says it all ….

Eagle 2

Hmmmmmmm…..

IMGP4064

IMGP4065

Yep …. quarry is not visible any more ..

IMGP4067

One more look ..
IMGP4066

Undaunted, their luncheon fare gone for now .. off they flew to search for more ..

IMGP4069

So very graceful

IMGP4070

Bye for now ….

IMGP4073

Such magnificent creatures these eagles are … we returned to our respective homes … still feeling a little of the wild energy emanating from this very brief closeness to the raw nature.  Existing in the same area as humans, but, oh, so very much apart.

So very humbling.

My garlic crop is growing very well, and so are my potatoes .. happy days

Thursday, May 30, 2013

My garlic crop is growing so very nicely, thanks to the chopped oak leaf mulch, the seaweed (that D & I gathered through the seasons!) and the EM (magic stuff, really).

The hardnecks are just gigantic and I’ve been harvesting the scapes .. some of which I’ve chopped up and put in the freezer for later stir-fries and some I’ve made into pesto .. oh, my goodness .. very garlic-y!   And really, the scapes have grown so early on this crop .. I’m sure that last year that they didn’t arrive till much later.

IMGP2016Stepping back . .here is a view of my garlic crop .. I’ve planted them in  rectangles this year, and should have made the paths between them wider than I did .. guess I got a little greedy in wanting to plant more garlic!

IMGP2036

A little Golden Crowned Sparrow was walking through the garlic forest ..

IMGP1624

I am so looking forward to harvesting this crop …

IMGP1354

Finding tiny objects from the seaweed .. so I decided to decorate the garlic leaves .. pretty, hey?

IMGP1356

The great, ah, scape .. ha ha

IMGP1844

A little Robin goes hunting in the garlic forest …

IMGP2082

I mixed up a batch of garlic scape pesto .. no recipe .. just roughly chopped up the scapes, tossed into the trusty Braun food processor, added lots of olive oil, sunflower seeds, slivered almonds .. finely grated Parmesan cheese … yummmmmmm… very delicious.  Using an ice-cream scoop, soon filled a parchment covered cookie sheet .. into the freezer for a while .. and then ..

IMGP2263

Filled up a ziplock bag and in the freezer .. ready to toss into soups, stews, spaghetti, sandwiches .. sheer heaven ..

IMGP2264

Young Anna’s … so very sweet ..

IMGP1657

Welcome visitors .. I just know these babies have hatched somewhere in our little forested yard ..

IMGP1650

My deluxe greenhouse .. an airplane windshield .. so very perfect …

IMGP1856(1)

I’ve planted these coffee sacks with potatoes … interesting to see how many potatoes I will get.  There are also some volunteer potatoes that I missed digging out .. so happily I will have many potatoes this year.  I heard about growing potatoes in burlap bags, so this is my version of that idea.  I put the bags inside sturdy garbage bags, with holes punched in the bottom for drainage.  And as the plants grow, I’ll unroll the tops and add more soil.

IMGP2017As a matter of fact .. that is what I am going to do right now .. change into my gardening clothes and run .. well. … .first I”ll brew some more tea and then I’ll rush outside!!

🙂

I proudly marched in the anti-monsanto march in Victoria, B.C.

Wednesday, May 29, 2013

A lovely rainy day here in Victoria, B.C.  Good for the gardens and wow my garden is growing great!  I’ve been harvesting the scapes even before they are curling around .. so impatient, I know, but the scape keeps on growing, doing its thing .. so I have more to harvest.

My pal D and I went to the big anti-Monsanto march last Saturday .. it was quite important for us to join in this event.  As you can see .. the skies were beautiful ..

01

Many interesting signs ..

15

Ok .. this was me .. I was working at our rental and these are my gardening clothes and didn’t have time to change . .although I don’t normally wear a sign!  It was a tiny sign as I drew it up in my car with materials at hand.  It reads:  Grief and More to come, with little drawings of a sunflower, crying and a little bumblee … saying “help me”

14

Of course .. lots of darling little dogs attended the event.

13

Shades of Avatar …

12 11

We marched along … all together .. a peaceable group …

10

.. along the Inner Harbour, past the Empress ..
09

Interesting that it was a “no news” event .. yet see here .. lots of people

08

07

True .. it’s not nice …

06

And back at the Parliament Buildings

05 04

03

02There were many people there .. hopefully many more people will learn about the evil of genetically modified seeds.. the harm that is done to the environment, the crops, the people …..

OMG .. I’m going to start blogging again tomorrow .. lots of photos of skies, flowers, animals and also some of the March against Monsanto

Well, I was all excited and was writing away when suddenly I somehow hit a combination of keys and lost my train of thought!  choo choo train.

Anyway, I was rhapsodizing on the end of the 4 month session of yard transformation that my DH have been working on since February.

Days, weeks, months of fixing up our rental .. the house was fine but the yard was a jungle.  So we rolled up our sleeves, began the daunting task of transformation.  And now the hard work has paid off and honestly, the yard looks like House and Garden.   Grass is growing, tall perennials (cedars, myrtles, Pyracantha’s, plus a myriad of other plants).

DH has constructed a lovely sidewalk, a retaining wall, edged with white fencing and  cement stairs that lead to the grassy area.  It’s a paradise of relaxation.  I’ll post some pics.

But as everyone who has ever done this sort of thing knows full well, it doesn’t happen easily. Lots of  hard physical work, we fetched trailer after trailer of sand, navvy jack, cement, wood, you name it.  Every day we were working hard, digging, shovelling, painting.

And as of today … just a few more things to do .. and we are done, fini …

So I will have the time now to work in our own garden (oh, wow, there is so much garlic, you wouldn’t believe!) and I can post pics of potatoes that I’m growing in sacks.

So much to share and I’m looking forward to the extreme pleasure of sitting at my computer and just “talking” away!  I’ll even bring my laptop outside.  This year I purchased a new one, by golly!  So my $85 HP can take a little rest.

I have magnificent photos of skies … to share.

Anyway, must go .. finishing details and all that .. and tomorrow I’ll start blogging.

Oh, one more thing .. my pal D and I were in the May 25, Victoria, BC March against Monsanto!!!    I took a few hours away from the work at our rental to participate in this momentous activity.  Lots of people there .. and the Blue Man from Avatar was there also ..took some pics of him.

🙂  happy days to all ….

Penny Table Top – This is such a very clever idea!

I had an old wood table that I was embarrassed about as the top was cracked. Most old side tables, stands, end tables get most of the wear and tear on the flat surfaces.

via Penny Table Top.

I was looking for organic methods to remove buttercups from the garden .. and .. in that wandering way of searching for information .. I found this treasure!

Now that pennies are slowly being removed from daily transactions …. and I for one will be keeping all of mine … I relish such wonderful creative ideas such as this one!!!

A lovely sunny, rainy and hailing kind of a day. I purchased my first Mason Bee house (and .. um .. more plants!)

Saturday, April 13, 2013

Yesterday was so much fun .. wandering around the Fernwood & Haultain neighbourhoods with my pal D … she knows the area so well and thus we walked up many little pathways and shortcuts that I was quite lost.  So in a way, it felt as if I was on a holiday in another town or country and all was new.  Quite energizing.

So when I got home, mid-afternoon, I had a little think about the choices that I had in the rainy afternoon.  Well, number one, it was rainy so I wasn’t excited about working outside and getting all muddy.

That left indoor stuff.  Made a pot of tea, pondered, read further on my Ruth Rendell novel “Kissing the Gunner’s Daughter” … really just wanted to finish this exciting mystery, but it is daylight so I really “should” be doing something.

Thought about working away on my decluttering.  Then decided to put the milk from my tea away to the fridge.  Opened the fridge door .. noticed that there were a few items that were ready for the compost, so I started that activity.  While I was transferring the veggie items to the compost pail, I wondered, curiously  …. if others have this same hobby.  Of purchasing fresh veggies for the compost and just put them in the fridge for a little while till they are in just the right stage for the compost bin?  Just wondering, that’s all.

While looking through the fridge I found a large bowl of peeled potatoes.  I’d purchased some organic potatoes awhile ago and since they were starting to sport buds on the surface, decided to peel them and cook “later” … helloooo .. it’s later now!

D and I had been talking about potatoes and she mentioned that she’d shred potatoes and make hash potato patties for her family and this was a portable snack for walks.  Well, thinks I .. I’ll try that.

Started off with shredding the potatoes with a grater, now that was a bit messy.  So I climbed onto a kitchen chair and brought down the kitchen processor to do the job.  Once all the bits were assembled and the machine plugged .. I started the task of shredding the potatoes.  Next step involved attempting to remove the excess water.  By this point I had realized that these little red skinned potatoes were not the right type for hash browns, but I’m too far gone in the process to stop.  Sliced up red onions and garlic, added to butter sizzling in an iron fry pan and proceeded to cook a gigantic patty.    After (quite) a while, the potatoes were done and very tasty, thank you very much.

I still had about 2 cups of mushy shredded raw potato left, so fetched a container of organic chicken broth, into  a Corningware pot it went, along with the potato mixture.  Searched through the fridge and found a lovely bag of carrots purchased at Dan’s Market.   These carrots were just delicious!  Also discovered some celery, so sliced up ample amounts of both of these and into the pot.  Next I found a bag of dry curry leaves that I had bought a few months ago.  Popped in 5 or 6 of them into the soup.  Yum

Now I was on a roll and decided to make a little carrot salad, so out comes the fine hand grater and soon I had a little bowl of very thin  strips of carrot, topped this off with finely chopped celery, a drizzle of flax oil and this tasted so delicious that I had two (tiny) bowls of salad.

My inner chef was very creative and I bow to her!  I’ve noticed that my cooking is very creative when I’ve tapped into my creative energy and this is so rewarding!

Sorry, no photos, I was thinking of taking photos to share, but that would have stopped my creative flow.  So just visualize very pretty attractive food dishes and you’ll be right!

On with today!  I’d taken some Rosemary cuttings months ago, added EM to the water and patiently waiting for them to root, and most of them have.  Passing by the kitchen counter, something different caught my eye and I returned to have a look .. and saw these oh so very dainty little Rosemary flowers on a cutting that had just the tiniest bit of root.  Magic, sheer magic.

`

New additions for my garden, purchased two of these lovely plants at Country Grocer at Royal Oak.   I’ve been finding all kinds of wonderful new plants …. supplied by local and Vancouver Island Growers .. how lovely!   I’ve not grown these before and Hummingbirds are supposed to love them.  I’ll take photos in the summer.

13

There was a bit of a hail storm, well, several, actually … throughout the day.

14

I went to the North Saanich Farmers Market today .. it’s once a month for now, soon to be twice a month and in June, yea, every Saturday.  It was my first visit today.  I was on a quest to purchase some Musquee de Provence seeds from Tina at Alden Harvest.  She’d completely sold out of these seeds at Seedy Saturday .. but she saved 6 for me and thus I paid for them .. these are my newest “precious” seeds. I’ll plant 4 and save 2.  Looking forward to taking photos of them this summer.

At the market, I purchased this most lovely Mason Bee house .. isn’t this great?  The little bees are in the top section (see the hole where they can fly out) and soon they will hatch and be busy little bees in our yard.  This style will be very easy to maintain.

11

Now for some yard fun, I perched the Mason house on the rustic tree trunk and beside it I placed this funky bell-ringer (from one of our thrift store ventures, when D & I buy things that we don’t really need, but, heck, they are fun).  Not sure if you can see the hummingbird design that is part of the bell-ringer.  I still have to decide where I’m going to install this, but the meantime, this looks good.   Doesn’t it appear as if the Masons have a doorbell?   Or have I had too much fresh air today .. ha ha ha

12

I was surprised to see an actual outdoor telephone, at the Deep Cove store, as these pay phones simply don’t exist much anymore.  Nice to see.

8

Good storage, plain and simple.7

Inside the washroom … I just had to take these pictures of the crows …. as I seem to be on a theme of crows right now .. time to share.6

Have you ever wondered what you were going to do with that spare set of cupboard doors?   Well, wonder no longer.5

et voila …4

and again ..3

Lovely wooden walkway outside the store .. old-fashioned, friendly and relaxing, don’t you think..2

I fell in love with this pot of wild strawberries, they’ll have small golden fruits.

10

These artichokes will occupy a fair bit of land so I’ll put some of them in pots.9

It’s been a fun day .. I’ve travelled in the city, out to North and then Central Saanich and had lots of fun …. talked to quite a few people.  Experienced the relaxed and creative atmosphere of the North Saanich Market.  I bought the world’s most delicious butter tart square there .. omg .. so very delicious that I will definitely return to buy another in May!

The weather has been:   sunny;  rainy;  hailing …. quite a mix and quite lovely for all the plants in our yard.

🙂
