My Garden – Mon Jardin – Mi Jardin – Mein Garten – Daily Adventures & Thoughts

No matter the language, my garden is my paradise. To watch the lovely birds that nest in the trees and bushes. The bees, butterflies are such a joy to see.

Organic straw for the garden and a few more bird feeders for my friends in the yard…

So yesterday was one of those days .. one where all I really wanted to do was go outside and tackle some outdoor chores.  I have a long list of these things to do outside and somehow quite enjoy ignoring them while I wander around the yard … soaking in the beauty of vines, plants, flowers .. all growing vigorously … watching the darling birds.

But .. yesterday I had a few places to visit throughout the city and I am really glad that I did.   One of the reasons that made me happy was a chance visit to a garden centre by Sears!  There was a sale!  And my lovely DH had given me a gift card for this shop (Cannor’s!!) which I happened to have with me.  He gives me a card for my birthday (recent) and one for Christmas.  I always try to get the maximum use out of these great gifts, so a sale just beckons me!

I bought a few (8 of them!!) items that were actually for air ferns.  Well when I looked at them .. I saw “bird feeder” instead.  So I now have a good supplies of these feeders for my little winged friends.  Here is one which I filled with sunflower seeds and am now waiting to see little birdies happily munching away.  These are shaped just nicely for the little guys to settle in, and feast away.  I can hardly wait to see them using it!

Here is a second type, sort of bowl-shaped, with cutouts!  I have 2 of these .. and as of today I am still waiting for the little birds to discover them.  They will, it’s just a matter of time.  However, seeing that I’m impatient I would love to see them “Now”!  🙂  Nature is patience so I must wait.  sigh.02Here is another lovely item that I bought at the garden shop yesterday … right now I put a little bit of water in it to see if the birds would like to bathe in it … no takers so far.  And I might be tempted to put birdseed in it sometime, who knows!  Not sure if it is meant to be outdoors in the winter .. time will tell.  It is made of metal with a type of clear coating over the metal.  Should it happen to weather during the winter, well .. that will add more of a personality to the patina!

03

And I travelled to the heart of Central Saanich to buy 2 bales of Certified Organic Straw .. a treat for my garden .. no chemicals or pesticides.  Lovely.  I’ll be spreading this over my garlic once it is planted and then will add some as a winter mulching around my perennials.  It isn’t easy to find Certified Organic Hay or Straw and so I was quite happy to find Ryan Vantreight’s organic farm!   He is passionate about organic gardening .. we need more people like him!!   🙂

04

Sweet little squash flowers .. growing on.  I can see tiny squash here and there in the yard .. there is still a month of growing let so I think I will be able to harvest a handful of tiny squash.  How fun that will be.

05

This is the little bird-cage that I bought last summer in Port Alberni .. the top of the cage is hinged and hangs at the back.  I’d placed a cheerful geranium inside and look at the tiny little sunflower that is growing alongside of it!

Some afternoon skies from yesterday.

My running around yesterday also included a trip to the Casino, for my yearly $5 Happy Birthday gift.   I had troubles with my card at first, it kept showing up as “invalid” and then after 2 trips to the Customer Service desk I finally had everything right.  I chose to play the 1 cent machine.  And I could do no wrong!  Kept winning 8 free draws and line wins and then my $5 gift had blossomed to $10.62.  I went wild and bet the 62 cents and then decided to cash in my winnings and walked out, $10 richer than when I went in.  There is a slippery slide to gambling and I choose to not do the slide.  Tempting, though .. and they know it!  All those bells & whistles and free spins with lots of credits piling up.  As I walked away, I thought .. should I just play a few more games?   No …………. and off to Lee Valley Tools I went!

Wise choice and I spent a few happy minutes in there .. love that place.

So yesterday was a fun day, caught some sales, won some money and finally .. oh joy .. was able to spend a little time in my garden … my favourite place to be!

Our Friday workout involved .. surprise surprise!  .. more steep stairways.  This was our second set and believe you me .. both stairways were workouts.  I went up and down only once for these and there were others who made multiple trips.   I bow to them.   A goal for the future for me.

12

And as always we made our journey through pathways that I doubt very much I can find on my own.

07

Some young deer making their way through the neighbourhood.  Someone commented that they belong in the wild.  Well, this was their wild till homes were carved out of this forested area.

08The morning had started out overcast .. and slowly we could see some blue skies.

20

Some crows were having a grooming session .. taking time out of their day to just relax and watch the world go by.

09

I am thankful again for this opportunity to explore the many beautiful places in our city.   Always new places .. always more tranquil settings.

04

There was mesh fencing along the way .. and I’m sure there were pathways down to the ocean.  Perhaps another time.06

Couldn’t you just sit here someplace comfy and just gaze into these clear waters for a while?

05

Then it’s back home .. and what do I see in the bird feeder!  A chubby little squirrel.  “get out of there” I said, rapping repeatedly on the glass.

02

This one listened to me and swiftly ran away.  See his little back feet gripping onto the wood?  They are pointed backwards for speedy getaways such as this one.

I’d purchased some burlap coffee bean bags from a local organic coffee roasting company.   The burlap is wonderful for all sorts of uses in the garden.  I always like to get the maximum use out of things, multi-purpose, you know.  So I was opening out the bags so I could get double the surface material to use.  Only problem was .. this material is as tough as nails to cut through, even with my large shears.  So, my sewing brain remembered my wonderful Olfa rolling cutters .. I chose my largest one.   Absolutely stunning!   I quickly cut through 10 bags.  So now I’m all set to be creative with this material in the yard.  And that will be for another day.

13I so enjoyed the time spent working away on this project.  For the sun had come out and I could feel the lovely warmth on my face as I cut away.  The birds were singing.  The massive construction noise  in the neighbourhood was dimly heard through my temporary water fixture (a sump pump in a big wash tin) .. this works wonders at drowning out superfluous noise!  Plus my little i-pod, playing Ravi Shankar.   It was bliss.

I noticed these notices on the coffee bags and thought I would share them .. as not everyone would have the opportunity to view these!

14

See .. organic .. ethical …and I thought about all those people involved in the process of tending and harvesting the bean crops.   The persons who manufactured the burlap bags.  The machines that filled the bags and weighed them.  The office personnel who created these papers, after much research and documentation ..kept in files somewhere … the persons who stitched same to the bags.  Those who loaded the bags onto trucks and moved them to ships for transportation here.  If those bags could talk.  Well, they can’t so I’m left with my wild imagination of the steps involved.    And as I played with cutting the material I couldn’t help but think of those hard-working individuals who were involved.    All that energy in this material.  And I respect that energy and embrace that material which will help my yard in so many ways.15

See .. here is that lovely blue sky I was talking about …

10I had forgotten about this little Hellebore .. growing away in the shady part of the yard .. happily growing away, I should say!

19

And, since I had a few extra 2 Litre empty milk jugs, it was time to plant some more seeds in that lovely “winter sowing of summer seeds”   Notice that one shows “Coffee”18 17

Well .. amongst some seams in those burlap bags .. I found some coffee beans.  Now, I have no idea if they will ever grow, but I thought … what is the harm in putting them in one of the containers to see if they grow.  So I will wait and see!

16Well, that was pretty much my day.  Aside from walking around the yard .. observing some tree branches which need to be clipped.   And sundry other things to be done.

Another day.

🙂
